Most people assume it does. If a message or call comes in from someone saved in your contacts, on an app you trust, it feels verified — like the app already checked. In most cases, it hasn’t. Here’s what’s actually happening underneath the apps you probably use every day.
WhatsApp doesn’t use usernames and passwords. To create an account, you provide a phone number, and WhatsApp verifies it with a text or automated call. That number — not any cryptographic proof of who you are — is the foundation of your entire account. Even as WhatsApp rolls out optional usernames, account recovery still routes back through that same number behind the scenes.
What this means in practice: WhatsApp’s strong encryption protects your messages and calls in transit extremely well. But nothing in the app verifies that the person holding that phone number is actually who they claim to be. If a number is spoofed, hijacked through a SIM swap, or simply reassigned to someone new, WhatsApp has no built-in way to catch it. The encryption is real. The identity behind it is assumed, not proven.
Signal is a genuine step further. Every one-on-one conversation has a unique “safety number” — a cryptographic fingerprint you can compare with the other person to confirm your connection hasn’t been tampered with. This is real, meaningful verification.
But look at how it actually works: you have to open a settings menu, pull up the safety number, and compare it with the other person — ideally in person, or over a separate trusted channel. Signal itself is upfront that this only confirms the encryption keys haven’t changed; it doesn’t verify who’s actually on the other end. It’s a manual, opt-in process built for people who already know to look for it. In practice, that’s a small fraction of users. For everyone else, the cryptography is there, but invisible and unused.
Strong identity verification technology already exists in the security world.
